Father's Day: The Names of God - Abba to Zur

The Names, Descriptions, Symbols, Titles and Characteristics of God

Abba - Mark 14:36 - And he said, Abba, Father, all things [are] possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. (Note: Neal A. Maxwell, in Not My Will, But Thine, p.46 - p.47, writes "The 'Abba experience' in Gethsemane also affirms that Jesus had a special relationship with God. The suffering Jesus there addressed God as 'Abba,' meaning 'Father, dear,' a most familial form of address that was fully justified by Jesus' unique relationship with the Father.")

Abhir - Isaiah 49:26 - And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD [am] thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob. [Note: Abhir means "to be strong" and is here translated "mighty One."]

Him whom the nation abhorreth - Isaiah 49:7 - Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, [and] his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, [and] the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

Adonai - This word is translated "Lord" in our KJV bibles. This word is used 300 times in the Old Testament, and is plural when referring to God, and singular "Adon" when referring to a human lord. Some examples are Genesis 15:2, 2 Samuel 7:18-20. The word is extensively used in Isaiah and Ezekiel. [Note: see JEHOVAH]

Advocate - Isaiah 3:13 - The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. [Note: This is one of those derived titles. But see D&C 62:1 - this word is never capitalized.]

He that bringeth good tidings unto them of good - 3 Nephi 20:40 - And then shall they say: How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings unto them, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings unto them of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion: Thy God reigneth!

The Christ - Revelation 20:4 - And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Christ Jesus - Acts 19:4 - Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Christ Jesus our Lord - Romans 8:39 - Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Philippians 3:8)

Christ the Lord - Luke 2:11 - For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Christ the Son - Alma 11:44 - Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil.

Comforter - Isaiah 51:3 - For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. (John 14:26)

Another Comforter (Second Comforter) - John 14:16 - And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [Note: The name Second Comforter does not appear explicitly in scripture. But in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Three 1838–39, p.150 we find this: "The other Comforter spoken of is a subject of great interest, and perhaps understood by few of this generation. After a person has faith in Christ, repents of his sins, and is baptized for the remission of his sins and receives the Holy Ghost, (by the laying on of hands), which is the first Comforter, then let him continue to humble himself before God, hungering and thirsting after righteousness, and living by every word of God, and the Lord will soon say unto him, Son, thou shalt be exalted. When the Lord has thoroughly proved him, and finds that the man is determined to serve Him at all hazards, then the man will find his calling and his election made sure, then it will be his privilege to receive the other Comforter, which the Lord hath promised the Saints, as is recorded in the testimony of St. John, in the 14th chapter, from the 12th to the 27th verses. ... Now what is this other Comforter? It is no more nor less than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself; and this is the sum and substance of the whole matter; that when any man obtains this last Comforter, he will have the personage of Jesus Christ to attend him, or appear unto him from time to time, and even He will manifest the Father unto him, and they will take up their abode with him, and the visions of the heavens will be opened unto him, and the Lord will teach him face to face, and he may have a perfect knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God; and this is the state and place the ancient Saints arrived at when they had such glorious visions—Isaiah, Ezekiel, John upon the Isle of Patmos, St. Paul in the three heavens, and all the Saints who held communion with the general assembly and Church of the Firstborn."]

He that confirmeth the word of his servant - Isaiah 44:26 - That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:

He [that is] of a contrite and humble spirit - Isaiah 57:15 - For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name [is] Holy; I dwell in the high and holy [place], with him also [that is] of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Chief corner stone, elect, precious - 1 Peter 2:6 - Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. (Ephesians 2:20)

Counsellor - Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. [Note: In 2 Nephi 19:6, the word is spelled "counselor."]

Covert - Isaiah 32:2 - And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

He that created the heavens - Isaiah 42:5 - Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

Creator - Ecclesiastes 12:1 - REMEMBER now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Creator of the earth - Isaiah 40:28 - Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, [that] the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? [there is] no searching of his understanding.

Creator of the ends of the earth - Isaiah 40:28 - Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, [that] the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? [there is] no searching of his understanding.

Creator of the first day - D&C 95:7 - And for this cause I gave unto you a commandment that you should call your solemn assembly, that your fastings and your mourning might come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, which is by interpretation, the creator of the first day, the beginning and the end.

Great Creator - 2 Nephi 9:5 - Yea, I know that ye know that in the body he shall show himself unto those at Jerusalem, from whence we came; for it is expedient that it should be among them; for it behooveth the great Creator that he suffereth himself to become subject unto man in the flesh, and die for all men, that all men might become subject unto him.

Creator of Israel - Isaiah 43:15 - I [am] the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

Supreme Creator - Alma 30:44 - But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.

He who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies - Psalms 103:4 - Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

Cyrus - Isaiah 45:1-5 - 1 THUS saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; 2 I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: 3 And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call [thee] by thy name, [am] the God of Israel. 4 For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. (Note: This is one of those double meanings or "types" wherein Cyrus the king is likened to Christ the king. Isaiah's use of Cyrus, long before that king was even born, is used by those who don't understand the nature of prophecy to "prove" that the book of Isaiah was not written by Isaiah, but by someone who lived in Cyrus' day.)

Day star - 2 Peter 1:19 - We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Was dead, and is alive - Revelation 2:8 - And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;

Deliverer - Isaiah 36:18 - [Beware] lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? [Note: This is an example of a derived title. In 2 Samuel 22:2 "deliverer" is specifically used; it is capitalized, becoming a proper name for the Lord, in Romans 11:26 and D&C 138:23.]

He who delivers our soul from death - Psalms 33:19 - To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

Despised - Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Him whom man despiseth - Isaiah 49:7 - Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, [and] his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, [and] the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

[Thou that] dwellest [between] the cherubims - Isaiah 37:16 - O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest [between] the cherubims, thou [art] the God, [even] thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.

He who dwells in the high and holy [place] - Isaiah 57:15 - For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name [is] Holy; I dwell in the high and holy [place], with him also [that is] of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

El - This word is not found in our King James Bible, but it is the word translated as God 250 times in the Old Testament. Some examples are Genesis 7:1, 2 Samuel 22:31, Isaiah 9:6, and Ezekiel 10:5. This is equivalent to the Moslem "Allah" but, of course, does not refer to the god Islam proclaims today. Their god is neither male nor female, is never referred to in the Qur'an as "Father", and one of the greatest blasphemies to a Muslim is to say that God had a Son. A different deity entirely.

El-Berith - Judges 9:46 - And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard [that], they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith. [El-Berith means God of the Covenant. It would seem, however, that this verse may be naming some pagan idol. What do you think?]

Elect - Isaiah 42:1 - BEHOLD my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, [in whom] my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

El Elyon - Isaiah 14:14 - I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. [Note: El Elyon is translated "most High" in this verse.]

El-Gibhor - Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. [Note: El-Gibhor means Mighty God.]

Elohim - This is the word translated as God 2,570 times in the Old Testament. It is a plural noun - indicating three or more - but used with singular verbs. Some examples are Genesis 17:7, I Kings 8:23, Jeremiah 31:33, and Isaiah 40:1. The dual form, rendered Eloh or Eloah, in our alphabet, is used in the book of Job. In Deuteronomy 6:4, we have the resounding "Hear O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one!" The last word is "echad" which means "unity in plurality." It is the same word used regarding marriage in Genesis 2:24, when a man is to leave his father and mother and become one with his wife. The word "yachid", not used in either of these examples, means a unique singular "one."

Eloi - Mark 15:34 - And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

El-Olam - Isaiah 26:4 - Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH [is] everlasting strength: [Note: El-Olam is translated "God of everlasting time" here.]

El Roi - Genesis 16:13 - And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? [Note: "him that seeth me" is the translation into English of El Roi - "God of seeing" - the God who opens our eyes.

El Shaddai - "God All Sufficient" is used 48 times in the Old Testament, 31 of these in Job. Some examples are Genesis 17:1-2, Proverbs 3:27, Micah 2:1, Isaiah 60:15, and Ruth 1:20-21.

Endless and Eternal - Moses 7:35 - Behold, I am God; Man of Holiness is my name; Man of Counsel is my name; and Endless and Eternal is my name, also.

Ensign of the people - Isaiah 11:10 - And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

He that entereth in by the door - John 10:2 - But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

From everlasting to everlasting - D&C 20:17 - By these things we know that there is a God in heaven, who is infinite and eternal, from everlasting to everlasting the same unchangeable God, the framer of heaven and earth, and all things which are in them;

Exalted in judgment - Isaiah 5:16 - But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

He who set the example - 2 Nephi 31:9 - And again, it showeth unto the children of men the straitness of the path, and the narrowness of the gate, by which they should enter, he having set the example before them.

He who executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed - Psalms 103:6 - The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

Eyaluth - Psalms 22:19 - But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. [Note - Eyaluth is translated "strength."]

Faithful and True - Revelation 19:11 - And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Father - Isaiah 63:16 - Doubtless thou [art] our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, [art] our father, our redeemer; thy name [is] from everlasting.

A father is one who gives life. Elohim is the father of our spirits. Jehovah is the father of our salvation. Thus Jesus Christ is the Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.

Alma 11:38-39 - Now Zeezrom saith again unto him: Is the Son of God the very Eternal Father? And Amulek said unto him: Yea, he is the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth, and all things which in them are; he is the beginning and the end, the first and the last;

And when we are baptized we become Christ's sons and daughters.

Mosiah 5:7 - And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters. (See 1 Corinthians 4:15 and 2 Corinthians 6:18)

This confusion of name vs function vs title, unfortunately, is a MAJOR stumbling block to apostate sectarian Christianity.

It should be emphasized that Latter-day Saints pray to the Father in the name of Christ. We may and should praise Christ, but we do NOT pray to Him.

"As is clear from the whole body of revealed writ, the eternal decree of the Eternal God is that men should worship the Father, in the name of the Son, by the power of the Holy Ghost. As it is written: 'All the holy prophets . . . believed in Christ and worshiped the Father in his name.' (Jacob 4:4-5.)

"There is nothing clearer or plainer than this. We pray to the Father, not the Son; but according to the laws of intercession, advocacy, and mediation, our answers come from the Son. Reference to nearly every section in the Doctrine and Covenants bears this out. None, therefore, need to suppose, as is found in the prayer books of sectarianism, that it is proper to pray to either Christ or the Holy Ghost.

"However, righteous persons do have a close, personal relationship with their Savior. It is through him that forgiveness comes. Because of his atonement we may be free from sin. Salvation is in Christ. He pleads our cause. He is our Mediator and Intercessor. And we do and should sing praises to his holy name, as do the angels of God in heaven also. Among their hymns of praise are such wondrous words as these: "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. . . . Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever." (Revelation 5:9-13.)

"There is no language of worship and adoration that surpasses the language of prayer. What is more natural than to use the noblest and most perfect expressions utterable by mortal tongues in addressing Him who sits upon the great white throne? It is no wonder, then, that in praising the Lord Jehovah we often do so as though we were addressing him in prayer, even as though we were pleading with him for eternal blessings.

"We have already seen that Alma, in wonder and amazement at the forgiving grace poured out upon him, addressed Jesus in words of praise and thanksgiving. The Old Testament prophets followed a similar course. Having the same understanding prevalent among the Nephites, they sought to extol and magnify that name by which these incalculably great blessings come." (Bruce R. McConkie, The Promised Messiah, p.335-336.)

Eternal Father - 1 Nephi 11:21 - And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father! Knowest thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw?

(Note: On page 346 of Volume 1 of Reynolds and Sjodahl's Commentary on the Book of Mormon, we are told that the names of both of his children "were signs and wonders given them by the Lord as testimonies of his predictions. The names of two of his sons are recorded: Shear-Jashub (Is. 7:3) and Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. (Is. 8:3) Whether Immanuel, mentioned in Is. 7:14 and 8:8, was the second son of Isaiah is a debated question. Among early Hebrew commentators Kimschi held that view. Grotins, Faber, Fritche, Gesenins, Hitzig and others have also advocated that opinion. Others have regarded the prophecy concerning Immanuel applicable only to our Lord and his virgin Mother. But, notwithstanding the preponderance of this interpretation, it seems to me that the context of Is. 7:14 compels us to regard the virgin, the 'alma' of that text as a young woman living at the time of King Ahaz and the prophet; for, how could her motherhood otherwise have been a sign to the skeptic king, for whom it was intended? But, if the virgin was the contemporary of the king and the prophet, she was, in all probability the wife of the latter. We notice that Isaiah, before the birth of Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, undoubtedly following divine instructions, summoned two competent witnesses to accompany him to the mother of the expected child, to ascertain to their own satisfaction and to disarm public criticism, that she, the 'prophetess,' was the legal wife of the Prophet. And, is it not probable that she was given that title, because she was the mother of the prophetic child Immanuel,—the type of the Messiah?")

Ishi - Hosea 2:16 - And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, [that] thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali. (Note: Both Ishi and Baali mean "my husband", but the second one also means "my Baal." So this is a play on words that most English speakers fail to appreciate.)

JESUS - Matthew 1:21 - And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. [Note: Jesus is the individual name of the Savior, and as thus spelled is of Greek derivation; its Hebrew equivalent was Yehoshua or Yeshua, or, as we render it in English, Joshua. In the original the name was well understood as meaning "Help of Jehovah," or "Savior." Though as common an appellation as John or Henry or Charles today, the name was nevertheless divinely prescribed, as already stated. Thus, unto Joseph, the espoused husband of the Virgin, the angel said, "And thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." (James E. Talmage, Jesus the Christ, Ch.4, p.35.)]

Lord

In the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, Vol.2, we read that "the term 'Lord,' printed with capital letters in many English versions of the Old Testament, is a substitute for the name Jehovah (yhwh in the Hebrew Bible). Even though Latter-day Saints identify Jesus Christ as Jehovah (3 Ne. 15:3-5; cf. D&C 110:1-4), they utilize the title 'Lord' for both the Father and the Son, as is common throughout scripture. The title 'Lord God' in the Hebrew Bible is a compound of 'elohim preceded by either yhwh (Jehovah) or adonai ("my" lord or master). This combined name-title refers mainly to Jehovah in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, and in other latter-day scriptures, 'Lord God' can mean either the Father (e.g., Moses 4:1-4) or the Son (Mosiah 3:21)."

This name-title is used lowercase ('lord') 3 times, capitalized ('Lord') 59 times, and all caps ('LORD') 427 times in Isaiah if I counted correctly. Here is the single verse which has all three spellings.
